Dr. Richard Mills is an Associate Professor in Modern European History at the University of East Anglia, affiliated with the School of History and Art History. He directs the Centre for East Anglian Studies and is a member of the East Centre for East Central Europe and Soviet Space studies. His research focuses on sport history, nationalism, and Cold War Europe, with particular expertise in Yugoslav studies. Mills holds a Ph.D. in Modern History from UEA (2013) and has published extensively in journals like International Journal of the History of Sport and History Workshop Journal.
His work explores intersections between sport and politics, notably through his award-winning monograph The Politics of Football in Yugoslavia. Current projects include a touring exhibition 'Racing in the East: Transnational Speedway in Cold War East Anglia' displayed across venues like the British Motor Museum. He teaches modules on Yugoslav communism/nationalism, Cold War history, and sport history.
