Richard Lightman

Dr. Richard Lightman is a Senior Lecturer in Music at the University of Kent, leading the Music & Audio Technology program and serving as Director of Employability for the discipline. He holds roles as Admissions Lead for Music & Audio Technology and chairs the Musicians' Union Education Section Committee. His career spans music production, composition for film/TV, and industry advocacy, with notable work in Bhangra music hybridization. He previously held executive roles at the Music Producers Guild and UK Music's Copyright Committee.

Research focuses on cultural mediation in music production, particularly the evolution of South Asian diaspora Bhangra music in the UK. Recent publications explore narrative structures in pop music and innovative music practices. Active in professional bodies, he advocates for music creators' rights and sustainable industry practices.
