Richard Kitchen is a Professor and Wyoming Excellence in Higher Education Endowed Chair in Mathematics Education at the University of Wyoming’s College of Education, School of Teacher Education. He holds a Ph.D. in Curriculum & Instruction (Mathematics Education) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, an M.A. in Mathematics from the University of Montana, and a B.A. in Mathematics from the University of Colorado Denver. His career includes roles as the Kennedy Endowed Chair of Urban Education at the University of Denver and professorships at the University of New Mexico and San José State University.
His research focuses on diversity and equity in mathematics education, particularly supporting multilingual learners and marginalized communities. Key initiatives include the Discursive Mathematics Protocol (DMP), designed to enhance mathematical reasoning and language development in problem-solving settings. He partners with organizations like Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) and AAAS Project 2061 to provide professional development for teachers.
Dr. Kitchen has authored books, edited volumes, and peer-reviewed articles in journals such as Journal for Research in Mathematics Education and Mathematics Teacher. He served on editorial boards for prominent journals and led the NSF-funded Center for the Mathematics Education of Latinos/as (CEMELA). Additionally, he founded Escuela Luz del Mundo, a progressive Christian school serving Mexican immigrant families in Albuquerque.
His teaching includes courses like EMAT 5100 (Theory & Research in Learning and Development) and EDCL 5810 (Writing for Publication). He emphasizes school reform, teacher collaboration, and culturally responsive pedagogy.
