Richard Gilman-Opalsky is a Professor of Political Theory and Philosophy in the Department of Political Science at the University of Illinois Springfield. He holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from The New School for Social Research (2006), an M.A. in Philosophy from The New School, and a B.A. in Philosophy from Hofstra University. His research focuses on political philosophy, Marxism, autonomist politics, critical theory, global social movements, and feminist philosophy.
He has authored six books, including The Communism of Love (2020), Specters of Revolt (2016), and Spectacular Capitalism (2011), which was honored as “Book of the Month” by The International Herbert Marcuse Society in 2011. His work has been translated into German, Greek, Spanish, and French, and he has lectured globally on social theory and political philosophy.
Recognitions include the 2018-2019 University Scholar award, the highest scholarly honor at the University of Illinois system. His research examines the intersections of revolt, communism, and love, challenging capitalist logics through critical analyses of global movements.
