Dr. Richard Bloomer is the Dean of the College of Health Sciences and Professor at the University of Memphis. He joined the University of Memphis faculty as an Assistant Professor in 2004 after holding positions at Duke University Medical Center and Wake Forest University. As Dean, he leads the College of Health Sciences and the R. Brad Martin Student Wellness Center, while also directing both the Cardiorespiratory/Metabolic Laboratory and the Center for Nutraceutical and Dietary Supplement Research.
Dr. Bloomer earned his PhD in Exercise Physiology from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (2003), MS in Exercise Physiology from Ithaca College (1998), and BS in Health and Wellness from Buffalo State College (1996). His academic progression at the University of Memphis includes Assistant Professor (2004-2009), Associate Professor (2009-2012), and Professor (2012-present), with additional administrative roles as Department Chair and Dean.
His research focuses on oxidative stress, antioxidant therapy, and the application of dietary supplements for improving health. Dr. Bloomer has received external funding as principal investigator for close to 70 projects and has authored over 200 peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters. His work spans from basic science investigations of oxidative stress mechanisms to applied clinical trials testing dietary interventions and supplements. In 2013, he co-authored 'The Daniel Cure' which explores the Daniel Fast dietary restriction model.
His recent publications demonstrate continued activity across multiple research domains including fasting protocols, dietary supplements, metabolic health, and clinical applications of nutraceuticals. His work often involves human clinical trials examining the effects of various dietary interventions on health outcomes.

As an administrator, Dr. Bloomer has focused on growing student enrollment and enhancing research activity within the College. His laboratory facilities have undergone significant upgrades, and he has hired new investigators to expand the research portfolio. Under his leadership, the College of Health Sciences has a mission of growing health-related research at both mechanistic and applied levels while training future leaders in allied health sciences. He has served as a consultant to multiple nutraceutical and dietary supplement companies and has been an invited guest on radio programs nationwide to discuss his research.
