Richard Barrett

Richard Barrett is an Associate Professor of Political Science at Mount Mercy University. He joined the institution in 2016 as an Assistant Professor and was promoted to his current rank in 2021. His teaching and research span American politics, comparative politics, international relations, law, and political theory.

Barrett's professional experience includes federal government roles: clerking for a federal judge, practicing as a trial attorney at the U.S. Department of Justice, and writing speeches in the U.S. Senate. He has lived in seven U.S. states and traveled widely across Europe and other regions, including France, Italy, Greece, Lithuania, Guinea, the United Arab Emirates, and Georgia (post-Soviet). He speaks French, reads ancient Greek, and has knowledge of Georgian, Malinke, and Khmer languages.
