About
Dr. Raymond Unocic is an Associate Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at NC State University, affiliated with the College of Engineering. He holds a PhD from The Ohio State University (2008) and a master’s from Lehigh University (2003). His research focuses on aberration-corrected analytical scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) to study nanomaterials, energy storage systems, and catalytic processes. Key areas include MXene design, in situ/operando microscopy, and atomic-scale defect engineering.
Research Expertise: His work spans electronic/optical materials, energy storage, catalysis, and structural materials characterization. Notable contributions include pioneering atomic-scale fabrication techniques and elucidating structure-property correlations in 2D materials.
Awards: Recipient of the National Collegiate Inventors Award, MicroAnalysis Society Birks Award, two R&D 100 Awards, and multiple ORNL-UT Battelle Research Team Awards.
Labs & Teams: Leads the Materials MicroÅnalysis Group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and directs the Unocic Lab at NC State, focusing on advanced microscopy methods and nanomaterials development.
