Dr. Raymond Longbottom is a Research Fellow at the University of Wollongong's School of Mechanical, Materials, Mechatronic and Biomedical Engineering since 2008. He holds a B.Met.E. (UNSW, 2000) and a PhD (2005). Previously, he contributed to the EU-funded ULCOS project at NTNU. His expertise focuses on sustainable iron and steelmaking, including conventional and alternative processing methods.
Research interests include metallurgical processes, resource recovery from steelmaking byproducts, and carbon management in high-temperature systems. He supervises PhD and Master’s students on topics like hydrogen reduction of ironsand and coke reactivity. His work spans over 80 publications and grants from ACARP and New Zealand's government.
Key achievements include advancing recycling of BOS filter cake, optimizing hydrogen-based reduction techniques, and investigating slag-mineral interactions. He collaborates widely and is active in international conferences like MOLTEN 2024.
