Albert Einstein College of MedicineAbout
Randy F. Stout is an Assistant Professor at the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYITCOM), Director of the NYIT Imaging Center, and Group Leader for Imaging, Visualization, and Modeling at the Center for Biomedical Innovation. He is also a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Dominick P. Purpura Department of Neuroscience at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. His research focuses on gap junctions, astrocyte-oligodendrocyte interactions, and their roles in neural function and disease.
Stout earned his Ph.D. in Neurobiology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (2011) and completed postdoctoral training at Albert Einstein College of Medicine under David C. Spray. He established an independent laboratory at NYITCOM in 2017, integrating microscopy and cellular biology to study intercellular communication in neural and metabolic contexts.
His research interests span cellular neuroscience, gap junction structure/function, and nuclear hormone receptor signaling. Recent work highlights cysteine residues' role in connexin stability, stress-induced synaptic impairment via astrocyte energy pathways, and educational trends in undergraduate neuroscience.
Stout has mentored over 15 students across high school, undergraduate, graduate, and medical levels. His lab facilities include advanced imaging technologies at the NYIT Imaging Center, supporting interdisciplinary studies in cellular and neurobiological systems.
