Ralph V. Clayman

Ralph V. Clayman, M.D., is a Professor in the Department of Urology at the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine. He previously served as Chair of Urology (2002–2009) and Dean of the School of Medicine (2009–2014), leading the urology program to a top-20 national ranking. He has held academic appointments at Washington University School of Medicine and trained at the University of Minnesota.

Dr. Clayman is a world-renowned expert in minimally invasive urology, with pioneering work in laparoscopic nephrectomy, percutaneous stone therapy, and endourology. His research focuses on kidney stones, renal cancer, ureteral obstruction, and surgical innovation. He founded the first fellowship in minimally invasive urology and has authored over 400 publications and multiple textbooks.

His recent publications (2020–2024) reflect ongoing contributions to robotic surgery, stone management, renal biopsy, and urologic innovation, demonstrating sustained scholarly impact in clinical techniques and medical education.

Dr. Clayman has mentored numerous fellows who now hold academic positions worldwide. He co-founded and co-edits the Journal of Endourology and holds 14 patents in surgical instrumentation. His leadership has been instrumental in advancing urologic research and education at UC Irvine and beyond.

He is actively involved in clinical practice and research at the UCI Kidney Stone Center and continues to contribute to surgical education through publications and training programs.
