Rajani Bhatia (she/her) is an Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Women's, Gender & Sexuality Studies at the University at Albany. She previously served as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Georgetown University's Women’s and Gender Studies Program and earned her PhD from the Department of Women’s Studies at the University of Maryland.
Research Interests: Her work develops feminist approaches to reproduction and science and technology studies, focusing on the intersection of gender, population, environment, health, bioethics, and biomedicine. She engages as a scholar-activist in reproductive justice movements, analyzing global population control, right-wing environmentalism, and unethical contraceptive practices.
Publications & Grants: Bhatia authored the book Gender before Birth (University of Washington Press, 2018) and has published in journals like Social Science & Medicine and Science, Technology, & Human Values. She is currently conducting an NSF-funded study on population panics in the context of climate change and demographic shifts.
Teaching: Courses include Feminist Theory, Environmental Justice, Reproductive Justice Research Seminar, and Feminist Science, Technology, and Biomedicine Studies.
