About
Rachel Liu is a Professor of Emergency Medicine at Yale School of Medicine, where she serves as the Director of Point-of-Care Ultrasound Education and Fellowship Director of Emergency Ultrasound. She also holds positions as Faculty Associate with the Center for Medical Education and Associate Director of the Emergency Ultrasound Section. Dr. Liu plays a pivotal role in integrating ultrasound education across medical student curricula and training emergency medicine residents and fellows.
Dr. Liu earned her medical degree (MBBCh) from Trinity College in 2007 and completed her residency in Emergency Medicine at New York Medical College/Metropolitan Hospital Center in 2011, where she also served as Chief Resident. She further specialized with a Fellowship in Emergency Ultrasound at Yale School of Medicine in 2012. Her undergraduate education includes a BA in Biology, Psychology, and Classics from Case Western Reserve University (2002).
Dr. Liu's research focuses on the application and education of point-of-care ultrasound in emergency medicine settings. She has pioneered curriculum development for ultrasound education across medical student training stages and has made significant contributions to establishing competency standards for ultrasound use in clinical practice. Her work bridges the gap between technological innovation in medical imaging and practical clinical application, particularly in resource-limited settings. She has been instrumental in developing AI-assisted ultrasound techniques that enable non-experts to produce high-quality diagnostic images, potentially expanding access to critical diagnostic tools in underserved areas.
Dr. Liu's recent publications demonstrate a strong emphasis on ultrasound governance, educational frameworks, and clinical applications across multiple medical specialties. Her work spans from foundational educational approaches to cutting-edge integration of artificial intelligence with ultrasound technology. The research shows increasing focus on standardization of ultrasound practices, competency assessment methodologies, and expanding ultrasound applications into new clinical domains.
Dr. Liu has received numerous prestigious awards recognizing her contributions to the field:
- Recognition of Outstanding and Dedicated Service (2023) from American Board of Emergency Medicine
- AWAEM Mid-Career Faculty Award (2023) from The Society for Academic Emergency Medicine - Academy of Women in Academic Emergency Medicine
- Peter H. Arger Excellence in Medical Student Education Award (2023) from American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine
- Presidential Recognition Award (2023) from American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine
- Alvan R. Feinstein Award (2020) from Yale School of Medicine
Dr. Liu has held significant leadership positions in professional organizations, including serving as Chair of the American College of Emergency Physicians Emergency Ultrasound Section, Past-President of the Academy of Emergency Ultrasound in the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine, and current President of the Society of Clinical Ultrasound Fellowships. She is also a member of the inaugural Advanced Emergency Ultrasound examination committee of the American Board of Emergency Medicine. Her collaborative research network includes frequent co-authors such as Christopher L Moore, Andrew Taylor, Cristiana Baloescu, James Daley, Joseph Donroe, and Ryan F Coughlin.
