About
Philippe Collon is a Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Notre Dame, affiliated with the College of Science. He serves as Associate Chair and Director of Undergraduate Studies. His research focuses on developing Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) techniques for environmental tracer detection and stellar nucleosynthesis studies. Collon holds a Licencié en Sciences Physiques from the Université Catholique de Louvain (1993) and a Ph.D. from Universität Wien (1999).
His work emphasizes AMS applications in nuclear reactions, low-count-rate environments, and noble gas tracers. Recent advancements include a high-intensity ion source for stellar-relevant reaction studies. Collon has been honored with the Dockweiler Award (2015) for advising and Joyce Award (2010) for teaching. His lab, the Nuclear Science Laboratory (NSL), supports interdisciplinary projects like actinide analysis and carbon dating.
Research trends highlight AMS innovation for actinides, isotope standards (e.g., 236U/238U), and neutron-capture cross-section measurements. Publications span AMS instrumentation, nuclear astrophysics, and environmental sampling. Collaborations include the Institute for Structure and Nuclear Astrophysics (ISNAP) and Argonne National Laboratory's MONICA detector projects.
