Philipp Rothkirch

Philipp Rothkirch is a Research Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law (MPIL) since May 2025. He previously served as a Research Assistant (2022-2024) and Student Assistant (2020-2022) at MPIL and affiliated institutions. His academic focus lies in Public International Law, with particular expertise in state immunity, diplomatic protection, and international lawmaking processes.

• Education: Law Studies at Heidelberg University (2017-2024), Specialization in Public International Law; Year Abroad at University of Leeds (2019-2020).

Research Interests: His work explores intersections between state accountability, immunity doctrines, and the evolving role of the International Law Commission (ILC) in codifying international norms. Recent teaching collaborations address practical applications of international law in moot court simulations and immunity frameworks.

Scientific Awards:

• 2019-2024: Scholarship recipient from the German Academic Scholarship Foundation
• Jessup 2025: Coached the German National Champion team to multiple international accolades

Teaching Contributions: Co-led courses on state officials' immunity and Jessup moot court simulations at Heidelberg University, collaborating with Laurids Hempel, Felix Herbert, and colleagues.
