Philipa Mladovsky

Philipa Mladovsky is an Associate Professor in the Department of International Development at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). She specializes in comparative health policy, universal health coverage, and migrant health, with a focus on equity in healthcare access and the political dimensions of health financing. Her work examines how social exclusion impacts healthcare access for marginalized populations, including asylum seekers, refugees, and low-income communities in Senegal, Ghana, India, and the UK.

Education: Dr. Mladovsky holds a PhD in Social Policy (LSE), MSc in Health, Population and Society (LSE), and a BA in Social Anthropology (Cambridge University). She previously worked at the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies and the World Health Organization.

Research Interests: Her research integrates multidisciplinary approaches to analyze health policy frameworks, with emphasis on migrant mental health governance, universal health coverage reforms, and the role of social capital in health insurance enrollment. Key themes include the intersection of security policies with health outcomes for migrants, and the fragmentation of healthcare systems in diverse contexts.

Professional Roles: She co-leads the MSc in Health & International Development and chairs the LSE Global Health Initiative. Her recent work addresses systemic inequities in mental health coverage for forced migrants in England and the political economy of healthcare financing reforms in low-income countries.

Grant Activities: She led the EU-funded Health Inc. project exploring social exclusion and healthcare access in Ghana, Senegal, and India. Her current projects examine migrant health policy responses across Europe and the impact of austerity measures on healthcare systems.
