Dr. Philip Long serves as an Honorary Visiting Research Associate at Bournemouth University’s Tourism Academic Group. He previously held leadership roles as Associate Dean and Head of the Tourism Academic Group (2012–present). With a career spanning academia and the tourism industry, his expertise bridges research, policy, and practice. He holds a PhD from Sheffield Hallam University (2002), a BA (Hons) in Development Studies (UEA, 1987), and a PG Cert in Further Education (1991).
His research focuses on cultural events, diaspora communities, film/TV-tourism linkages, and tourism partnerships. He actively engages with sector organizations, including the Tourism Society (UK) and International Festivals and Events Association (Europe). Philip has supervised ten international PhD students and teaches across undergraduate and postgraduate programs, particularly in tourism-media intersections and creative industries.
He has authored/co-authored books such as ‘Tourism and the Creative Industries’ (2016) and edited volumes on festivals and royal tourism. His work explores themes like soft power in tourism campaigns, heritage migration, and the cultural politics of festivals.
