Philip Deloria

Philip Deloria is the Leverett Saltonstall Professor of History at Harvard University, specializing in American Indian history, cultural studies, and transnational indigenous relations. His work explores the intersections of Native American peoples with U.S. political and cultural frameworks, as well as comparative global indigenous experiences. He previously held roles at the University of Michigan, serving as Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education and Director of Native American Studies programs. Deloria is a co-author of *American Studies: A User’s Guide* (2017) and has written extensively on topics ranging from indigenous visual arts to the history of American Studies as a discipline.

His research includes seminal works like *Playing Indian* (1998), which examines white cultural appropriation of Native American identity, and *Indians in Unexpected Places* (2004), analyzing indigenous resistance through sports, travel, and media. Deloria currently chairs the Repatriation Committee at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian and serves as series editor for the *CultureAmerica* series. His recent projects focus on mid-20th-century Native American visual arts and co-editing *I Heart Nixon: Essays on the Indigenous Everyday*.

Deloria’s academic contributions span teaching in areas like environmental history, the American West, and food studies. He is an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and maintains global academic collaborations with scholars in Taiwan and Australia. His work emphasizes decolonial methodologies and the role of indigenous knowledge in contemporary global contexts.
