Philip Bromiley is the Dean’s Professor in Strategic Management and a Distinguished Professor at the Paul Merage School of Business, University of California, Irvine. He joined the faculty in fall 2005 and currently serves as Faculty Chair and area coordinator for Strategic Management. His research adopts a behavioral perspective on strategic management, focusing on organizational decision-making, risk, and investment.
His research interests include:
- Behavioral research in strategic management
- Strategic decision-making and strategy processes
- Corporate risk-taking and risk assessment in commercial lending
- Accounting misrepresentation and product recalls
- Trust in organizations and board composition
- Corporate capital investment and R&D policy
His work has been published in top-tier journals and discussed in major media outlets such as The Wall Street Journal and The New Yorker. He has authored nearly 100 journal articles and book chapters, as well as three influential books: Behavioral Strategic Management, Behavioral Foundations of Strategic Management, and Corporate Capital Investment: A Behavioral Approach.
Professor Bromiley has received numerous honors, including:
- Fellow of the Academy of Management
- Fellow of the Strategic Management Society
- Distinguished Educator Award, Academy of Management (2024)
He has held significant editorial roles, serving as Associate Editor for Strategic Management Journal and Management Science, and on the editorial boards of Organization Science, Journal of Management, Journal of Management Studies, and Academy of Management Journal. He previously chaired the Strategic Management and Organization Department at the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management and served as National Coordinator for the Consortium of Centers for Organizational Research. He also contributes to public discourse through commentaries in the National Association for Corporate Directors’ blog, Minneapolis Star-Tribune, and St. Paul Pioneer-Press, and has consulted for organizations ranging from startups to GE Capital and New Century Financial.
