About
Prof. Dr. Peter Rutschmann is a Professor at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) within the Faculty of Civil, Geo and Environmental Engineering. He leads the Oskar von Miller Experimental Laboratory and focuses on hydraulic engineering and water management, with specialties in hydropower, flood protection, river morphology, and ecohydraulics. His work combines hydraulic model testing with advanced computational methods, including hybrid modeling approaches.
Rutschmann studied and received his doctorate in 1988 from ETH Zurich. He worked there in applied research for over two decades before joining the University of Innsbruck in 2002 as Professor of Hydraulics, Hydrology, and Hydraulic Engineering Testing. Since 2007, he has been a full professor at TUM, where he developed the patented Shaft Power Plant I technology.
His research spans hydrodynamic modeling, sustainable water systems, and environmental engineering. Key publications highlight innovations in hydropower design, flood risk assessment, and water quality dynamics, reflecting his expertise in both theoretical and applied hydraulic engineering. He has contributed to international journals on topics such as fish passage optimization, river training impacts, and bacterial transport in flumes.
Rutschmann is affiliated with professional organizations, including the Advisory Board of the DWA Bavarian Regional Association. He has led significant projects like the Shaft Power Plant I and collaborates with institutions like the Oskar von Miller Experimental Laboratory. His work emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to address critical water management challenges.
