Prior to joining ACC, Bonfitto worked in the Curatorial and Scholars Program departments at the Getty Research Institute (GRI) in Los Angeles, where he co-curated major exhibitions including 'Connecting Seas: A Visual History of Discoveries and Encounters' (2013-2014) and 'The Legacy of Ancient Palmyra' (2017).
Bonfitto's research focuses on the history of archaeology, ancient art reception, and museum studies, with particular interest in how ancient artworks and materials have been interpreted across different historical periods. His work bridges ancient and contemporary practices, examining how discovery and interpretation connect different eras. He has collaborated with contemporary artists like Richard Tuttle, Thomas Demand, and Tacita Dean, exploring how archival materials inform contemporary artistic practice. Bonfitto's research demonstrates how art serves as a fundamental tool for visual communication across cultures and historical periods.
His publication record reveals consistent engagement with archaeological archives, ancient Mediterranean sites, and cross-cultural artistic exchange. Bonfitto has examined topics ranging from Pompeii excavations to Ottoman-era artistic documentation, with recurring themes of cultural transmission, visual representation of ancient sites, and the relationship between historical archaeology and contemporary practice. His work spans traditional academic publications, digital exhibitions, and public-facing commentary on cultural heritage issues.
Bonfitto is also the lead author and editor of the forthcoming publication 'World Architecture and Society: From Stonehenge to One World Trade Center' (ABC/CLIO, 2021). His professional activities include extensive exhibition curation, academic lectures at institutions like UCLA and USC, and contributions to digital scholarship through platforms like the Getty's online exhibitions. He approaches teaching with an emphasis on student-centered learning, encouraging students to make personal connections with artworks rather than focusing solely on historical facts.
