Patrick Fuery is a Professor at Chapman University and Founding Director of the Center for Creative and Cultural Industries within Wilkinson College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. He holds a BA (Hons), MA, and PhD in Comparative Literature from Murdoch University, Australia. His career includes previous academic roles at the University of London, Sussex University, and the University of Newcastle (Australia).
Dr. Fuery’s research bridges psychoanalysis, semiotics, and film theory to explore cinema’s role in shaping human consciousness, intimacy, and anxiety. His work examines intersections of time, space, and the unconscious in film, as well as broader themes like gender studies and medicine’s influence on the arts. Recent projects focus on cultural disturbance and the sublime, alongside an edited volume on medicine, culture, and the arts.
His publications include eight books and numerous chapters, with translations into Chinese, Italian, French, and Korean. Notable works analyze the cinematic sublime, film phenomenologies, and sustainable development goals through urban renewal. He has collaborated on research addressing inclusive spaces and education policy.
