Patrick Bieler

Dr. Patrick Bieler is a Scientific Assistant in the Department of Science, Technology and Society (STS) at the Technical University of Munich. He holds a PhD in European Ethnology from Humboldt University of Berlin (2024), following an MA (2015) and BA (2011) in European Ethnology and Social Sciences from the same institution. His research focuses on the interrelationships between science, technology, and society, with particular emphasis on urban mental health, green chemistry, and biopolitics.

Patrick Bieler’s academic journey includes:

• Master’s degree in European Ethnology (2015, Humboldt University of Berlin)
• Doctorate in European Ethnology (2024, Humboldt University of Berlin), focusing on urban mental health and biopolitical dynamics.

His research interests span Urban Anthropology, Medical Anthropology, and Science and Technology Studies (STS). Key areas include the relational constitution of humans and urban environments, interdisciplinary methodologies in mental health research, and socio-molecular studies in green chemistry. He explores how urban living impacts mental health, leveraging ethnographic approaches to bridge social science and psychiatry. His work has been featured in journals such as Journal of Contemporary Ethnography, Frontiers in Public Health, and Geoforum.

He received the Heinrich-Böll-Foundation PhD Scholarship (2016–2019), supporting his doctoral research. Teaching includes courses such as "Ethnography of Chemicals, (Green) Chemistry & Society" and "Making a Mess with Methods", reflecting his commitment to interdisciplinary and innovative pedagogy. He collaborates with the "Knowledge after Progress" research program and is affiliated with the Laboratory: Anthropology of Environment | Human Relations, contributing to global debates in STS and public health.
