P.J. Wijkstra

Prof. P.J. Wijkstra is a Professor at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Medical Sciences, affiliated with the Groningen Research Institute for Asthma and COPD (GRIAC). His research focuses on respiratory medicine, particularly chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), non-invasive ventilation, and sleep-related breathing disorders. He has authored over 180 publications, including studies on mechanical ventilation efficacy, diaphragm dysfunction, and ALS respiratory management.

Key research interests encompass COPD pathophysiology, non-invasive ventilation strategies, and clinical outcomes in neuromuscular disorders. Recent work includes evaluating hypercapnia improvement in COPD patients and centralized respiratory care approaches for ALS.

He serves as Treasurer of the European Respiratory Society (2022–2025) and Editorial Board Member of the Chest journal. His contributions span clinical trials, guideline development, and international collaboration in respiratory health.

Research highlights include pioneering studies on NIV cardiac effects in COPD and defining central sleep apnea diagnostics. He advises on respiratory care protocols and leads translational research initiatives.
