About
Olof "Charlie" Karis is Professor of Experimental Physics at Uppsala University and Director of the Swedish synchrotron facility MAX IV Laboratory in Lund. From 2015 to 2022 he served as Head of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Uppsala University. Concurrently he is a Core Group member and Fellow within the Quantum Materials theme at the LINXS Institute of Advanced Neutron and X-ray Science.
Research Interests
- Ultrafast electron dynamics in magnetic materials
- Energy harvesting and conversion materials
- Advanced synchrotron and neutron-based experimental techniques
- Quantum materials bridging theory and experiment
His current scientific leadership spans large-scale facilities such as MAX IV and the European Spallation Source (ESS), where he promotes integrated experimental programmes that connect fundamental condensed-matter theory with state-of-the-art photon and neutron probes.
Leadership & Facilities
- Director, MAX IV Laboratory (since 1 July 2023)
- Head, Department of Physics and Astronomy, Uppsala University (2015–2022)
- Core Group member, LINXS Quantum Materials Theme
- LINXS Fellow
Professor Karis actively builds consortia that unite academic groups, instrument scientists and industrial partners to exploit the unique capabilities of Sweden’s national synchrotron and neutron sources.
