Olaf Hemker

Prof. Dr. Olaf Hemker is a Professor of Civil Engineering at the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Landscape Architecture at Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences. He has held this position since 2003, focusing on geotechnical engineering, soil mechanics, and sustainable construction. His academic career includes roles as a project leader at CDM Jessberger GmbH and as a civil servant in environmental management in Thuringia and NRW.

Education: Dipl.-Ing. (Civil Engineering) from Technische Universität Braunschweig, Dr.-Ing. (PhD) in non-destructive testing of soil stabilization systems. He has extensive teaching experience in geotechnical engineering, soil mechanics, and construction methods across bachelor's and master's programs in Landscape Architecture, Civil Engineering, and Environmental Management.

Research interests center on equestrian arena design, soil compaction, rainwater management, and sustainable construction materials. Notable projects include studies on synthetic materials in riding grounds, erosion control in large events, and phosphorus elimination in agricultural drainage systems.

His recent research includes investigations into the mechanical behavior of riding arena surfaces and biodegradable material substitution in sports facilities. He has collaborated with organizations like the German Equestrian Federation and the Research Society for Landscape Development.

Professional activities include leading over 20 training programs for industry professionals on soil mechanics and construction practices since 2013. He has authored/co-authored over 30 publications, including books on soil management and geotechnical engineering.
