Nuria Pastor Carrillo

Nuria Pastor Carrillo is a Full Professor in the Department of Cell Biology at the University of Seville, where she leads the Cell Culture and Radiobiology Research Group (BIO-120). Her academic career spans over three decades, during which she has established herself as a prominent researcher in DNA damage and repair mechanisms, with particular expertise in topoisomerase enzymes and their role in cancer biology.

Her research interests encompass radiobiology, cancer therapeutics, DNA damage response mechanisms, and epigenetic regulation. Dr. Pastor Carrillo investigates how DNA topoisomerases function in chromosome segregation, the effects of epigenetic drugs on DNA damage pathways, and the development of novel anticancer strategies targeting neuroblastoma and other malignancies. Her work bridges fundamental molecular biology with translational cancer research.

Analysis of her recent publication record (2010-2022) reveals a consistent research trajectory focused on DNA damage mechanisms, particularly examining how epigenetic drugs like 5-aza-2'-deoxycytidine cause DNA lesions that require specific repair pathways. Her work increasingly incorporates nanomedicine approaches for cancer therapy and has expanded into radiation biodosimetry through her participation in the European RENEB network.

Dr. Pastor Carrillo currently leads multiple research projects including a contract studying MYCN in neuroblastoma stem cells and an R&D&I project optimizing differentiation processes in stem and tumor cells. She has received continuous funding through the BIO-120 Research Group incentives and has participated in numerous national and international collaborative projects throughout her career.

Her laboratory, the Cell Culture and Radiobiology group, maintains active research programs in cancer cell biology, DNA repair mechanisms, and radiation response. Through her involvement with RENEB, her lab also contributes to the European capacity for radiation emergency response through biological dosimetry techniques.
