Nupur Joshi is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anthropology and Sociology at Kalamazoo College. She concurrently serves as a Social Science Research Consultant at the University of Minnesota’s Institute on the Environment. Her research focuses on water and housing security, environmental governance, urbanization, and international development, often employing mixed-methods approaches.
Dr. Joshi holds a Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Arizona (2022) with a minor in Epidemiology, a Diploma in College Teaching from the same institution, an M.A. in Society and Culture from the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (2016), and a B.A. in Sociology from the University of Pune (2014). She also earned a Diploma in Gender and Women Studies from the University of Pune (2012).
Her work examines resource access in informal urban settlements, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa and India. Key themes include the intersection of gender, public health, and governance in addressing systemic inequalities. Recent research explores pandemic impacts on urban populations, stakeholder engagement in environmental decision-making, and hybrid water systems in Nairobi’s informal settlements.
Joshi’s publications span World Development, Social Science & Medicine, and Cities, reflecting her interdisciplinary approach to urban challenges. She has contributed to initiatives analyzing food systems, market governance, and the role of informal service providers in achieving equitable urban development.
