Jason Corburn

Jason Corburn is a Professor in the Department of City and Regional Planning and School of Public Health at UC Berkeley, where he directs the Center for Global Healthy Cities and co-directs the joint MCP/MPH program. His research examines environmental health justice, science-policy interfaces, and community-engaged approaches in urban settings globally. Corburn leads evaluations of the Advance Peace urban gun violence reduction program across 10 US cities and participatory planning initiatives in Richmond (CA), Kenya, and Colombia.

His research integrates urban planning with public health to address environmental justice, health inequities, and community wellbeing. Current projects focus on slum health improvements in Nairobi's Mukuru settlement, climate justice strategies in Medellín, and Health in All Policies implementation in Richmond. His work emphasizes collaborative knowledge production between residents, scientists, and policymakers to co-create solutions benefiting marginalized communities.

Corburn's publications explore community recovery from trauma, citizen science for climate justice, and health-oriented urban governance. His books analyze structural determinants of urban health, informal settlement upgrading, and equitable planning frameworks. Recent work examines how participatory mapping and community-led data collection can advance water/sanitation access in informal settlements.

Honors include multiple teaching awards, the Great Places Book Award, and UN recognition for global health equity work. He advises governmental agencies including WHO, UN-Habitat, and the World Bank on urban health policy and informal settlement upgrading strategies.
