Norm Friesen

Dr. Norm Friesen is the Canada Research Chair in E-Learning Practices at Thompson Rivers University, Kamloops, Canada. His work focuses on media pedagogy, educational technology, and phenomenological approaches to learning. He holds a Master’s from Johns Hopkins University and a PhD in Education from the University of Alberta.

Research interests include e-learning standards (e.g., CanCore), Web 2.0 integration, media literacy, and the philosophical underpinnings of technology in education. He co-edits the open-access journal Phenomenology & Practice and has published widely on topics like surveillance studies, McLuhan’s media theory, and the 'mediatic turn' in pedagogy.

Awarded the Canada Research Chair, Friesen has presented globally on learning technologies, metadata standards (e.g., ISO/IEC SC36), and critical perspectives on education technology. His work bridges humanities and STEM, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to digital learning spaces.
