Nora Haenn

Nora Haenn is a Professor of Anthropology and International Studies at North Carolina State University (NC State), serving as Director of Undergraduate Programs in Interdisciplinary Studies. She holds affiliations with the Genetic Engineering and Society Center. Her research focuses on globalization, migration, environmental justice, and conservation policy in southern Mexico. She has been awarded three Fulbright-García Robles Fellowships and grants from the National Science Foundation and Wenner-Gren Foundation.

Education: B.A. in Philosophy from Fordham University (1989); Ph.D. in Anthropology from Indiana University (1998).

Research Interests: Explores migration’s sociocultural and environmental impacts, particularly in Calakmul, Mexico. Her work examines how international migration reshapes gender roles, economic strategies, and indigenous livelihoods. Key themes include conservation politics, conditional cash transfers, and the intersection of gender and development.

Awards: Fulbright-García Robles Fellowships (2009–10, 2024), NSF funding (2010), and recognition for her 2020 book Marriage after Migration.

Administration & Advising: Oversees undergraduate interdisciplinary programs and advises M.A. students in Anthropology. She contributes to doctoral committees, especially those linked to Genetic Engineering and Society.

Public Engagement: Presents on migration and environmental issues to academic and public audiences. Her research bridges policy, grassroots activism, and global development challenges.
