Dr. Niklas Swanström is an Executive Director at the Institute for Security and Development Policy (ISDP) and co-founder. He serves as a Fellow at the Foreign Policy Institute of the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), Johns Hopkins University, and as Senior Associate Research Fellow at the Italian Institute for International Political Studies (ISPI). His expertise spans conflict prevention, cyber warfare, Chinese foreign policy, and regional security dynamics across Northeast Asia, Central Asia, and Southeast Asia.
Dr. Swanström holds a Ph.D. and Licentiate degree in Peace and Conflict Studies from Uppsala University, alongside MA degrees from Uppsala University and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. He has studied at Beijing Languages Institute, Beijing University, and Dalian Languages University.
His research focuses on conflict management, supply chain security, disinformation, and Chinese military expansion. Recent publications include analyses on Green Tech security, semiconductor supply chains, and Russian disinformation in the Indo-Pacific, with keywords spanning technology, security, and political science.
Current projects examine Arctic security, Sino-Russian cooperation, and Taiwan's research security. His affiliations include SAIS and ISPI, where he contributes to policy-focused research.
