Mr. Nigel Hall is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Southampton and a Consultant Paediatric and Neonatal Surgeon at Southampton Children’s Hospital. He holds qualifications including an MA in Neuroscience (University of Cambridge, 1995), MB BChir (Cambridge, 1997), and a PhD (University of London, 2010). His research focuses on improving outcomes in children’s surgery through randomized controlled trials and understanding necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). He leads initiatives to embed patient-centered outcomes and has contributed to studies on NEC pathophysiology, surgical decision-making, and novel therapies.
Dr. Hall’s research spans NEC, gastrointestinal anomalies, and surgical innovations. Notable projects include investigating remote ischaemic conditioning for NEC prevention and developing biomarkers for early NEC identification. He chairs the European Paediatric Surgeons Association Network Office and sits on the British Association of Paediatric Surgeons’ research committee.
His teaching roles include leading the 3rd-year research module for the BM program and supervising medical students in child health and surgical attachments. He currently mentors one PhD student and has supervised multiple clinical and research projects.
Dr. Hall’s clinical expertise combines academic leadership with hands-on surgical practice, emphasizing translational research to bridge evidence-based medicine and clinical care. His work addresses critical challenges in neonatal and paediatric surgical care, aiming to reduce mortality and improve long-term outcomes.
