About
Dr. Nicola Hamilton-Whitaker is a Senior Lecturer at King's College London, affiliated with the Wolfson Sensory, Pain and Regeneration Centre (Wolfson SPaRC) within the School of Neuroscience. Her research focuses on white matter diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis and Small Vessel Disease, investigating cellular communication mechanisms in brain function using advanced techniques like electrophysiology and imaging. She leads the Hamilton Lab, which explores interactions between neurons, glial cells, immune cells, and vasculature in disease models.
Her work contributes to understanding receptor-mediated cellular communication and myelin damage under ischemic conditions. Collaborations include partnerships with University College London (UCL) and other institutions. Key projects funded by MRC and ELA investigate white matter function, TRP channel roles, and neurodegenerative therapies. She has authored over 22 peer-reviewed articles, with notable contributions on TRPA1 channels, myelination dynamics, and microglial physiology.
Dr. Hamilton-Whitaker's research aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those addressing health and well-being. Her lab's work bridges basic science to translational medicine, aiming to develop therapies for neurological disorders.
