Dr. Nicholas Welch is Canada Research Chair in Change, Adaptation and Revitalization of Indigenous Languages and Assistant Professor in the Department of Linguistics at Memorial University. His research focuses on the morphosyntax of Dene, Algonquian and Inuit languages, language endangerment, and computational approaches to language documentation and revitalization.
Research interests include:
- Clausal structure and temporal grammar in Indigenous languages
- Development of pedagogical tools for language revitalization
- Application of technology in language preservation
- Copula systems and verb morphology
- Field documentation methodologies
As Canada Research Chair, he leads initiatives focused on developing sustainable models for Indigenous language maintenance and developing computational resources for endangered language communities.
