Dr. Nicholas Michelsen is the Associate Dean (Student Success) in the Faculty of Social Science and Public Policy at King's College London, and a Reader in International Relations within the Department of War Studies. He holds degrees from the University of Sussex and King's College London, including a doctoral thesis in War Studies.
His research focuses on international order, climate change's geopolitical impacts, reactionary internationalism, and strategic communications. He leads the ESRC-funded project 'The International Relations of Tropical Storms in the Caribbean,' collaborating with the University of the West Indies. He is affiliated with the Environmental Security Research Group, King’s Centre for Strategic Communications, and the Research Centre in International Relations.
Michelsen teaches widely on international relations, including climate change, strategic communications, and transnational movements. He actively supervises PhD students exploring themes like IR theory, climate politics, and far-right movements. His recent publications include Global Nationalism (co-edited) and Unmapping the 21st Century.
He participates in research centres addressing security, environmental challenges, and cybersecurity. Notable collaborations include COP28-related discussions on climate diplomacy and the role of reactionary movements in reshaping global politics.
