Dr. Nicholas Sard is an Associate Professor of Biological Sciences specializing in evolutionary ecology and conservation genetics. His research program applies genomic tools to address conservation challenges facing aquatic species in the Great Lakes basin. Current projects include environmental DNA (eDNA) assay development for species detection and population monitoring.
He directs the Sard Lab where students conduct field and laboratory research on species including lake sturgeon, sea lamprey, and bog turtles. Collaborative projects with state/federal agencies integrate genetic data into wildlife management decisions. His methodological expertise includes pedigree analysis, RAD sequencing, and eDNA metabarcoding for biodiversity assessment.
