About
Neil Saintilan is Professor of Environmental Sciences at Macquarie University's School of Natural Sciences and leads research at the Marine Research Centre. His work examines climate change impacts on coastal ecosystems, especially wetland responses to sea-level rise.
Research Focus:
Investigates biogeomorphic feedback in coastal wetlands with emphasis on:
- Blue carbon sequestration mechanisms
- Mangrove-saltmarsh ecotone shifts
- Sediment elevation dynamics
- Coastal habitat vulnerability modeling
Publication Trends:
Recent high-impact studies in Nature and Science quantify climate thresholds for coastal ecosystems, with applied research on:
- Blue carbon crediting methodologies
- Wetland restoration effectiveness
- Species-specific conservation planning
- Isotopic tracing of carbon pathways
Honors:
- Eureka Prize for Environmental Research (2019)
- Alexander von Humboldt Research Award (2021)
- AINSE Gold Medal (2021)
Collaboration:
Leads international projects with NSW Office of Environment and Heritage, US Geological Survey, and Beijing Forestry University to develop adaptive wetland management strategies.
