About
Neal Scott is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography and Planning within the Faculty of Arts and Science at Queen's University. He previously held the Canada Research Chair (II) in Greenhouse Gas Dynamics and Ecosystem Management from 2005 to 2015 and serves as Associate Head for Geography Graduate Programs.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Forest Ecology from Colorado State University
- M.Sc. in Soil Science/Ecological Studies from Colorado State University
- B.A. in Biology from Williams College
His research investigates carbon and nitrogen cycling in terrestrial ecosystems, with particular focus on human-induced disturbances. Key research areas include: permafrost thaw impacts on High Arctic ecosystems, climate-driven vegetation shifts, land-use legacy effects, microbial solutions for nitrogen pollution mitigation, and invasive species impacts on soil-plant interactions. His methodologies integrate field studies, process-based modeling, and geospatial technologies.
Scientific awards and honors:
- Canada Research Chair (II) in Greenhouse Gas Dynamics and Ecosystem Management (2005-2015)
Dr. Scott directs the Facility for Biogeochemical Research on Environmental Change and the Cryosphere (FaBRECC) and conducts field research at the Cape Bounty Arctic Watershed Observatory. He collaborates with policy developers to translate research findings into environmental management strategies.
