About
Bo Elberling is a Professor in the Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management at the University of Copenhagen. His research focuses on climate change impacts on Arctic and alpine ecosystems, particularly permafrost dynamics, greenhouse gas fluxes, and soil biogeochemistry. He leads studies on carbon and nitrogen cycling in permafrost regions, with a focus on Greenland and the Tibetan Plateau. His work integrates field observations, modeling, and experimental approaches to address climate feedback mechanisms.
Key research areas include: (1) Permafrost thaw and its effects on greenhouse gas emissions; (2) Arctic ecosystem responses to warming and fire disturbances; (3) Soil microbial processes influencing carbon sequestration; and (4) Legacy contaminant transport in Arctic environments. His findings contribute to global climate models and policy-relevant climate change assessments.
Recent studies highlight interactions between vegetation changes and nitrogen retention in Arctic soils, the role of wildfires in CO₂ uptake dynamics, and novel biosynthesis potentials in ancient permafrost microbiomes. Projects often involve international collaborations, including pan-Arctic soil surveys and interdisciplinary investigations into cryosphere-climate feedbacks.
Elberling's work is supported by grants focusing on Arctic environmental sustainability and has resulted in over 400 peer-reviewed publications. He advises researchers and policymakers on permafrost-related environmental challenges and serves as a leading voice in global cryosphere research networks.
