Nathan Riki Thomson is a Professor of Global Music and Community Engagement at the Sibelius Academy, University of the Arts Helsinki. A multi-instrumentalist, composer, and educator, his work centers on intercultural dialogue, transculturality, and community-based artistic initiatives. Born in Aotearoa/New Zealand and raised in Australia, he has collaborated internationally for over 34 years, including extensive residencies in Tanzania and Zambia. Previously teaching at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, he now leads research and community projects in Helsinki.
His research explores artistic identity formation through transcultural collaboration, technology integration, and the role of music in global citizenship. Notable projects include the Resonance series—spanning CDs, films, and publications—which investigate sonic identity and cross-cultural artistic processes. His work bridges performance, education, and community engagement, emphasizing music’s role in fostering dialogue across cultural boundaries.
