Queensland University of TechnologyAbout
Associate Professor Natalie Pecheniuk is a distinguished academic in the School of Biomedical Sciences within the Faculty of Health at Queensland University of Technology (QUT). With extensive experience in teaching and research, she focuses on building foundational expertise in biomedical science, biochemistry, and quantitative skills for multidisciplinary student groups including Biomedical Science, Medical Laboratory Science, Pharmacy, and Nutrition & Dietetics.
Dr. Pecheniuk earned her PhD from Queensland University of Technology exploring the Genetic Basis of Thrombophilia, followed by postdoctoral research at The Scripps Research Institute in California. Her academic journey includes positions at James Cook University and extensive collaborations with Australian Red Cross Lifeblood as a Visiting Research Fellow.
Her research program centers on blood coagulation pathways, thrombosis mechanisms, and transfusion-related coagulopathy. She investigates how biochemical and genetic factors impact coagulation, translational research on thrombotic phenotypes, and the influence of blood products on coagulation processes. Her work addresses significant health challenges as blood clots contribute to approximately 30,000 hospitalizations annually in Australia from conditions like deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals a strong focus on transfusion medicine, particularly examining extracellular vesicles in blood products, cryoprecipitate characterization, and genetic blood typing algorithms. Her research bridges basic science with clinical applications, especially in understanding how blood components affect coagulation pathways and patient outcomes.

Professor Pecheniuk has supervised numerous research students including PhD candidates Sudhir Jadhao (2022), Alex Jackson (current), and Ji Hui Hwang (2024), along with Masters, Honours, and visiting students. She serves as a Visiting Research Fellow with Australian Red Cross Lifeblood and maintains active membership in the Thrombosis and Haemostasis Society of Australia & New Zealand (THANZ) and the International Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH). Her teaching portfolio includes units such as Introduction to Biomedical Science, Quantitative Skills for Health Professionals, Biochemistry, and Clinical and Applied Haematology.
