Nikos Giannakopoulos is an Associate Professor of Ancient History at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, within the School of Philosophy's Department of History and Archaeology. His research focuses on the Greek city in the Roman Period, particularly institutions, politics, and society, with emphasis on Hellenistic and Roman Euboea, crime and order in the Roman East, and the reception of Classical Greece in the Roman Imperial era. He previously taught at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (2006–2018) before joining Athens University. Giannakopoulos has contributed to major projects like the Index du Bulletin épigraphique (2005) and the Inventory of Ancient Associations. His work bridges epigraphy, political history, and socio-cultural analysis of ancient Mediterranean societies.
Research interests include civic institutions (e.g., Gerousia), honorific practices, Roman provincial administration, and intercultural dynamics between Greek cities and Roman imperial structures. Notable publications explore topics such as honorific epigraphy, federalism in Euboea, and the political role of associations in Bithynia/Pontus. His scholarship frequently employs inscriptional evidence to reconstruct socio-political realities in the Hellenistic and Roman periods.
Giannakopoulos has authored monographs on the Gerousia in Roman-period Greek cities (2008) and Euboean urban institutions (2012). He collaborates internationally, presenting at conferences like the International Symposium on Memory and Impression (Tegea, 2019). His teaching and research address complex themes such as Roman integration strategies, local elite dynamics, and the evolution of Greek civic identity under imperial rule.
