Monika Gänssbauer is a Professor at the Department of Asian and Middle Eastern studies, Stockholm University, and has served as department head since 2020. She contributes to academic governance through roles in the Budget Committee and Faculty Board of Humanities, while co-editing the edition cathay scholarly book series.

- Honorary Professor of Translation Studies (Open University of Hong Kong, 2014-2017)
Her research focuses on translation theory and practice, particularly modern Sinophone literature, with notable projects including the 2012-2013 Contemporary Sinophone Authors anthologies and 2017-2020 Hong Kong short story collections. She conducts interdisciplinary work on China-Europe cultural relations and Chinese religious traditions, evidenced by her 2015 monograph on popular belief systems.
Current projects explore digital humanities applications in German-speaking academia and environmental narratives in Hong Kong literature. She collaborates with the LaboraTorio sulla Traduzione delle Lingue Orientali at Universita Ca'Foscari, Venice, and previously led the International Consortium on Research in the Humanities scholarship (2015-2016).
