Mohamed Nafea

Mohamed Nafea is an Assistant Professor in the Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE) department at Missouri University of Science and Technology. Previously, he held positions at the University of Detroit Mercy and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Georgia Tech. He earned his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Penn State University in 2018, along with a Master’s in Mathematics from the same institution in 2017, and a Bachelor's from Alexandria University in Egypt. His research focuses on fair machine learning, causal reasoning, federated learning, and information security/privacy. He has received notable awards including the NSF CRII Award (2023) and University of Detroit Mercy Faculty Research Awards (2022, 2024).

Research interests emphasize ethical AI, causal inference, and secure distributed learning systems. Recent publications explore causal discovery in latent variable models, federated learning optimization, and adversarial security in communication networks. His work bridges statistical learning with privacy-preserving technologies. Nafea maintains an active research program supported by grants and collaborates internationally in causal learning and information theory.
