About
Mitchell M. Holland is a Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Forensic Science at The Pennsylvania State University. He holds a B.S. in Chemistry from Hobart College (1984), a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Maryland (1989), and postdoctoral training at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He has held leadership roles, including Director of the Penn State Forensic Science Program (2009–2014) and Senior Vice President at Bode Technology Group (2000–2005). His research focuses on advancing forensic DNA techniques, particularly mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) analysis and next-generation sequencing (NGS). He has pioneered high-throughput DNA identification methods for mass disasters, such as the World Trade Center attacks, and served on editorial boards of journals like the Journal of Forensic Sciences. Holland is a Fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences and has received awards including the Honorary Doctorate from the University of Split (2017). His work bridges molecular biology, forensic genetics, and applied technologies in criminal investigations.
Education: B.S. Chemistry (Hobart College, 1984), Ph.D. Biochemistry (University of Maryland, 1989), Postdoctoral Fellow (Johns Hopkins University, 1990).
Research Interests: Forensic DNA analysis, mitochondrial DNA sequencing, NGS applications in forensics, human identification from degraded samples, and heteroplasmy assessment. His group develops tools for mtDNA MPS data analysis and explores DNA recovery from challenging materials like ammunition. Recent projects include optimizing NGS for maternal lineage studies and improving forensic mixture interpretation.
Awards and Recognition: Over 25 court testimonies as an expert in forensic DNA, leadership roles in SWGDAM (FBI), and advisory boards for legal and forensic organizations. His expertise spans academic, industrial, and governmental sectors, including roles at the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory (AFDIL) and consulting for crime labs globally.
Labs/Teams: Leads the Holland Research Group at Penn State, collaborating internationally on forensic genomics projects. Active in training forensic scientists through workshops in Croatia, Minnesota, and beyond.
