About
Dr. Mitchell Albert serves as Lakehead University/Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute (TBRRI) Research Chair and Professor of Chemistry, with adjunct appointments in Physics, Biotechnology, Biology, and Health Sciences. A co-inventor of hyperpolarized (HP) noble gas MRI during his Stony Brook University graduate studies, he previously held faculty positions at Harvard Medical School and University of Massachusetts Medical School before joining Lakehead/TBRRI in 2011.
His research program centers on medical imaging innovation:
- Lung ventilation mapping using HP helium-3/xenon-129 MRI
- HP xenon-129 functional MRI for brain imaging and neurological disorders
- Biosensor-based HP xenon MRI for early cancer detection (breast/lung) and Alzheimer's disease diagnosis
Dr. Albert's scientific contributions have been recognized with the Presidential Early Career Award (1999) and NSF Career Award (2001). His laboratory at TBRHRI (1640B) operates under the Hyperpolarized Gas MRI Lab framework (hpgasmri.com), supported by research chair funding that enables ongoing exploration of novel MRI applications for critical health conditions.
