About
Mikhail Medvedev is a full-time Professor at the University of Kansas in the Department of Physics & Astronomy. He is an APS Fellow and has held visiting positions at the Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton) and the Niels Bohr International Academy (Denmark). His academic career at KU progressed from Assistant to Associate to Full Professor since 2002.
Education:
- PhD in Physics, University of California at San Diego (1996)
- MS in Physics, University of California at San Diego (1994)
- MS, Moscow Institute for Physics & Technology, Russia (1993)
Research Focus: Medvedev's work spans high-energy astrophysics, cosmology, and plasma physics. Key areas include:
- Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and relativistic shock physics
- Magnetic field generation in cosmic structures
- Astrobiological impacts of cosmic events (supernovae, GRBs)
- Accretion dynamics around compact objects
- Nonlinear plasma waves and instabilities
Publications: His research has produced influential work on jitter radiation, magnetic field evolution in GRBs, and cosmic ray effects on biodiversity. Recent papers focus on accretion physics, plasma self-organization, and wave-particle interactions.
Scientific Recognition:
- DOE Career Development Grant (2004-2007)
- Royal Society Best Presentation Award (2006)
- Monell Foundation grant at IAS (2010)
