Mike Murphy

Dr. Mike Murphy is a Professor of Geology at the University of Houston, specializing in the structure and tectonics of Tibet and the Himalaya. He has conducted 15 field expeditions to the region and authored over 40 research papers. His current role as Principal Investigator involves a multi-institutional project analyzing historical and future earthquake patterns in western Nepal.

• Education: PhD from University of California, Los Angeles.

His research focuses on integrating field geology with seismic studies to understand tectonic processes and earthquake dynamics in high-mountain regions. Murphy has taught field geology in the U.S. Rocky Mountains for 23 years, emphasizing hands-on learning for university students. He also serves as the Academic Director for SIT Study Abroad's Nepal program on Geoscience in the Himalaya.
