About
Michelle C. Sanchez is a Professor of Theology and Director of Graduate Studies at Harvard Divinity School (HDS), affiliated with Harvard University. She holds a BA from New College of Florida, MDiv from HDS, and PhD in the Study of Religion from Harvard University. Her research focuses on Christian reform movements, Protestantism's legacies, and the interplay between theology, politics, and social change in 16th-century Europe. She examines how theological writing responds to historical conditions and contemporary issues like secularization and political theology.
Her major work Calvin and the Resignification of the World (2019) analyzes John Calvin’s Institutes, exploring doctrinal arguments within material and embodied contexts. Current projects investigate the 20th-century conceptualization of Christianity as a 'worldview' influenced by 19th-century Calvinist theology.
She has co-hosted significant conferences on topics like 'Christianity, Race, and Mass Incarceration' (2017) and 'Historicizing Secular Studies Across the Disciplines' (2019). Recognized for teaching excellence, she received the Derek Bok Center Award (2012) and Denie S. Weil Teaching Fellowship. She actively contributes to scholarly networks such as the American Academy of Religion.
Her publications span theological method, ritual studies, and political theology, with works in journals like Journal of Religion, Scottish Journal of Theology, and Political Theology.
