About
Professor Michael Tiemann holds the Chair of Inorganic Functional Materials at the University of Paderborn within the Faculty of Science, Department of Chemistry. He leads the Research Group Tiemann focusing on the development of nano- and microstructured solids for various applications.
His research interests span across Materials Science, Nanotechnology, and Inorganic Chemistry with specialization in Porous Materials, Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs), and Gas Sensing technologies. The research group develops functional materials for sustainable energy concepts including CO₂-neutral electricity generation, efficient energy storage, and energy consumption reduction solutions.
The group's publications reveal strong trends in nanoporous materials research, particularly Metal-Organic Frameworks and metal oxide-based sensors. Recent work focuses on oxygen sensing using zinc tin oxide photoluminescence, water sorption in CPO-27 frameworks, and gas sensing applications with nanoporous indium oxide. The research combines fundamental material science with practical applications in energy and sensing technologies.
Professor Tiemann's laboratory is well-equipped with advanced instrumentation including FT-IR spectroscopy, UV/VIS spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, physisorption systems, mercury porosimetry, TGA, PXRD, DLS, gas mixers, dip coaters, spin coaters, and impedance spectroscopy equipment, enabling comprehensive materials characterization and development.
The research group actively recruits PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, and student assistants, offering opportunities for Bachelor's and Master's theses in the field of inorganic functional materials.
